STD Testing Q & A

Why is STD testing important?

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) don’t always cause symptoms, so you may unknowingly spread an infection to your partner. Routine STD screening is important to stop the spread of STDs and to:

  • Preserve your fertility
  • Detect and treat STDs early on
  • Receive the STD counseling you need

Everyone who’s sexually active should be undergoing STD testing at least once a year. More frequent STD testing may be recommended if you have a history of STDs, have multiple partners, or have a partner who has an STD.

Which STD tests do I need to be screened for?

It depends on your sexual health and any symptoms you may have, which may include burning during urination or abnormal discharge. Family Medical Care, PLLC, screens for any of the following STDs:

  • Hepatitis B and C
  • HIV 1 and 2
  • Gonorrhea
  • Chlamydia
  • Syphilis
  • Genital herpes 1 and 2

Visible STDs, such as genital warts or genital herpes, can often be diagnosed with a physical exam, but Dr. Torquato may also want to run some lab testing to confirm your STD diagnosis or rule out other types of STDs.

What happens during STD testing?

Most STD testing at Family Medical Care, PLLC, involves a simple blood draw or a urinalysis. Dr. Torquato can check you for multiple types of STDs with a short or long STD blood panel.

If you have symptoms, such as vaginal discharge, Dr. Torquato may recommend a pelvic exam and gathering a sample of the discharge to send to the lab — this is similar to a Pap smear. Dr. Torquato can personalize your STD screening and counsel you about safe sex practices. Your STD screenings by Dr. Torquato will always be discreet, private and HIPPA at Family Medical Care, PLLC.

Family Medical Care, PLLC, proudly offers low-cost, flat-rate pricing for both short and long STD blood panels, depending on your needs. You can even choose to be screened for a single STD if you’re concerned you’ve been exposed or are experiencing specific symptoms.
